The Sea Sheller's Daughter

Marine biologist, Eve "Shelly" Shelbourne, has to find a way to carry on after the death of her twin brother, Denny.

Shelly blames her mother, Violet a famous marine archeologist turned treasure hunter for leaving the family when they were young and adding to Denny's depression caused by the challenges of living with multiple sclerosis.

With her research partner and lover, the brilliant and deaf, Beckett Bohannan by her side, she pushes through her grief to finish her commitment to find a treatment for MS developed from the venomous conotoxins found in marine cone snails.

Shelly uncovers a family secret about her DNA that makes her question her life, her relationships, and her health.

As she searches for the elusive snails, she also searches for answers from her mother. She joins her mother's crew and travels halfway across the globe. The two women clash until an accident threatens everything they both believe.

This story crosses continents, explores family relationships, wrapped in science and exploration.

All stories are personal. The Sea Sheller's Daughter is a sailors valentine to my father and my love of seashells.

I made a painful decision. I struck two books off my currently reading list on Goodreads.

I weighed the heft of Beth Macy's book, Factory Man in my hand, flipped to where I stopped, page 231, fanned to the end, page 408, and slipped it onto my finished reading book shel...

"Why are you doing NYC Flash Fiction - again?" One of my friends asked me this past weekend. "You always groan about the genre, the time limit, and you are never happy with your story.

Well, of course, that's what makes it fun. Besides, a writer is never happy with the...

My family has taken on a service project. We have become volunteers for Operation Paperback.

This unique organization has impressed me with its simple mission to distribute gently used paperback books to service members and their families living in the U.S. and deploye...

I started a new novel. I should be bursting with energy, excitement, plots, characters, discovery. In truth, I am. My new novel, Venom, is about a marine biologist, Eve, "Shelly" Shelbourne who is collecting venomous cone snails (yes, this is a real thing) to help...

The survey reports on women authors, published...

Writing teachers, editors, and authors are familiar with the expression "killing your darlings." This refers to the hard work of editing out a favorite character, scene, chapter, or entire plot lines.

It's hard!

The best characters are the ones who talk to you, invade y...

Last Saturday, I attended the Washington Writer's Conference, Books Alive! Event. I was excited, a local event where I would meet local writers and also have the chance to pitch my novel, Walking Without A Compass.

But something was wrong with the flow and vibe of the...

I'm halfway through the book, spark joy by Marie Kondo. Kondo, if you haven't heard of her, is a "Japanese decluttering guru," so it says on the back of the book. She's the author of the life-changing magic of tidying up.Her cleaning system has captured the heart...

As work on my novel continues, and continues, and continues... I've needed to take a step back and breathe. For me, that means writing and hearing  fresh voices in my head. If you're not a writer, the idea of voices in your head that don't scare the pants off you may s...

I'm taking a MOOC. I just love the word - it has that bovine, juvenile sound to it. A MOOC is a massive open online course. A hallmark of a MOOC is that there is no limit to the number of people taking the class or where they are from. There are hundreds of MOOCs offer...
